Before Hampton University, The Yard was Howard’s original stomping ground. This plot of land in the middle of our campus is what makes this University the Mecca. The Yard is the deal breaker for most students – it allures and attracts us. It inspires people to make movies about it, where they kill off Chris Brown. We chill on the yard, we show off on the yard, we protest on the yard and sometimes, we graduate on it too.

Just being in its presence changes people. Freshman begin to cultivate swag by merely walking on it. When celebrities cross the yard, they find themselves for the first time struggling to look important. Locals will sometimes feel less inclined to rob you.

It is important to note that The Yard is surrounded by and interconnects Douglass Hall, Alaine Locke Hall, Blackburn, the Fine Arts Building, a building no one can name, and Founders Library. This array of worn-out interconnected buildings is what gives our campus that bustling academic look in the afternoon. But don’t be fooled, it isn’t our intelligence that makes us look important, its our intense bourgeoisness.

While walking through the Yard you will see colored trees with foreign markings on them. Don’t touch them, because they represent the respective fraternities and sororities you will discover on campus. By stepping on said territories without permission you will be granted a complimentary paddle engraving to the face. On Fridays you’ll find the frats/soror’s stomping the yard, alongside any generic protesting or main event taking place.
